Registration is now open for the Cancer Guides II conference, sponsored by the Center for Mind Body Medicine (CMBM). It will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC from June 11-14, 2009. I intend to be there for the entire conference and hope you will too. Although initially designed for health care professionals, the program is entirely suitable for cancer patients and family members who want to learn more about the field.

CMBM conferences, organized by James Gordon, MD, have long been outstanding events in the cancer field. Many of us fondly remember CMBM's five Comprehensive Cancer Care conferences as well as previous Cancer Guides conferences in Berkeley, CA and Bloomington, IL. But this 2009 Cancer Guide II conferences promises to outdo all the others. Dr. Gordon has assembled an outstanding faculty for four days of learning on cutting-edge integrative cancer care.

I will be speaking about my investigation of new cancer treatments around the world, including my recent trips to Germany, Austria and Hungary. Other speakers will include the psychiatrist David Servan-Schreiber, MD, author of Anticancer: A New Way of Life, who will describe his own successful battle with brain cancer; Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, of the Center for Environmental Oncology of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; Moshe Frenkel, MD, of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; E. Dieter Hager, MD, PhD, of the Biomed Klinik in Bad Begzabern, Germany; and Susan Sencer, MD, of the University of Minneapolis. There are many other fine speakers, with information at www.cmbm.org

Key topics will include:

  • Models of integrative cancer care
  • Cutting-edge research: the most promising & practical
  • Alternative therapies & when to use them
  • Survivorship
  • Cancer & the environment

Practitioners of all sorts will deepen their practice with workshops on:

  • Caring for the caregiver
  • Integrating yoga & massage into cancer care
  • Nutrition & cooking for cancer patients
  • Integrative palliative care
  • Care at the End of Life
  • Integrating Chinese Medicine into cancer care
  • Women's cancers
  • Integrative oncology nursing
  • Integrative cancer care for kids
  • How to do research for patients

Who should attend?

  • Oncologists and Oncology Professionals
  • Physicians and Physician Assistants
  • Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
  • Cancer Patient Educators and Advocates
  • Psychologists & Social Workers
  • Mental Health and Counselors
  • CAM Practitioners
  • Dietitians and Nutritionists

This is the training in integrative oncology that health care professionals have been asked for. Putting on a conference of this sort (especially in these economic times!) takes an incredible amount of work. I urge all my readers to support CMBM's efforts and to attend this excellent conference.

For further information, go to the CMBM Web site at www.cmbm.org. Or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or call them at (202) 966-7338.

The CancerGuides training is the best way for physicians and other health professionals to learn to bring truly integrative care to their cancer patients. We use what we learned every day.
