Because I have to take an unexpected road trip, I am just going to send a few brief notes on the recent conference on "Circadian Disruption and Cancer" that I attended at the New York Academy of Sciences (June 19, 2009). It was a great success and almost every presentation that I heard was outstanding. I particularly enjoyed the presentations of William J.M. Hrushesky, MD, a medical oncologist in the VA system who has made his life work the exploration of the impact of light and darkness on cancer. Bill is the author of 178 PubMed-listed articles on the topic, and he is also a humane gentleman who has helped innumerable patients.

Richard G. Stevens, PhD, of the University of Connecticut gave an excellent presentation on the so-called "melatonin hypothesis" (light-at-night, circadian disruption and breast cancer). George C. Brainard, PhD, of Jefferson Medical College spoke at the role of light and ocular physiology for human melatonin regulation. David Blask, Md, PhD, spoke about the anticancer effects in both animals and humans (or "rats and women" as it was inelegantly phrased in the paper) as well as the disruption of melatonin by light at night. One of the big takeaway messages of the conference was to keep your bedroom as dark as possible at night. As always, I enjoyed Dr. Keith Block's presentation, this one on "Making Circadian Cancer Therapy Practical."

The New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) is one of America's premier scientific institutions. Founded in 1817, it is the third oldest scientific institution in the US. NYAS is located on the 40th floor of the new glass building at 7 World Trade Center, situation just outside the big hole in the ground where the Two Towers once stood. The original 7 WTC was destroyed in the attacks of September 11; this beautiful new building opened in 2006. With its wrap-around flood-to-ceiling windows, it is a very dramatic venue for a meeting. I was once again struck by the way that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), broadly defined, is making its way into conventional biomedicine. It becomes more and more difficult to say where the boundaries of good innovative science ends and where CAM begins. And that's just fine with me.

Phone Consultations

Ralph Moss does phone consultations for clients who have previously ordered one of our comprehensive Moss Reports on their cancer. The following is from a client who recently had a phone consultation:

"My wife has Stage III Synovial Sarcoma. Even after all conventional treatment, chances of recurrence or metastasis are very high. We were told that sarcomas are not immunogenic. However, historical data on Coley's Toxins as well as groundbreaking research being done at NIH prove otherwise. In my quest to identify the best 'consolidation' therapy for my wife, I concluded that I needed to talk with Dr. Moss. I had done all the research I could and consulted multiple doctors. I felt it necessary to consult an objective third party who is not personally invested in one specific modality. All I expected from the consultation was a discussion comparing Coley's to other immunology options such as Dendritic Cell Vaccination. However, Dr. Moss surprised me with two very promising and relevant options I had never heard of. He also recommended alternative methodologies to track the cancer (there are no known markers for synovial sarcoma). In summary, I found Dr. Moss to be highly intelligent, compassionate, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his work. I would recommend him to anyone serious about finding the best treatment possible." -- E.C., May 15, 2009
